Although many of Skyrim's threats scale to the level of the Dragonborn, it's still possible to find enemies and obstacles that are just too hard to face at the beginning of the game (*cough* the Frost Troll guarding High Hrothgar *cough*). Because of this mentality change, Novice level locks are sometimes ironically the hardest locks to pick. The focus just isn't there, the amount of respect given to the task is nonexistent. And then, well, the Dragonborn might feel a bit silly breaking a pick in the face of such a laughable task.

The frustrating part about lockpicking in Skyrim is the fact that lockpicks do break pretty easily, and it's a whole journey to the next shop and the next city to buy new ones (if they aren't found in loot). As such, lockpicking is one of the most annoying parts of the game, as it requires patience and resources.
That's why the Thieves Guild quest line is one of those quests that never gets finished, because at one point the player is in control of a special lockpick: the Skeleton Key. This special pick never breaks, which allows the player to pick any lock infinitely anywhere.

3 The Door That Requires A Key
There's one thing that doesn't quite make sense about Lockpicking in Skyrim, and it's the fact that technically it should allow the player to open any door - but it doesn't. In fact, there are some doors and chests that require the Dragonborn to have a specific quest item, usually a key, to open them.
This is fair from a gameplay perspective, but silly as it breaks immersion. Every lock requires a key, even those that can be picked. How are these special, unpickable locks any different? It makes absolutely no sense.
2 No Point Even Trying
During a long venture into a treacherous dungeon, the Dragonborn is likely to find quite a few locked doors and chests on their way. Not all of them will be easy, but if they aren't careful, they'll most likely spend all of their picks fairly quickly.
The saddest moment arrives when a fancy Master locked chest pops in front of the player, who now only has one measly lockpick left. At that point it's not even worth the trouble, no matter how tempting the task seems.

Lockpicks aren't just important when adventuring and passing through dungeons and forts. They're also a vital item when escaping the hand of the law, confined into the prison of one of the cities and towns. The funny part is, each cell will always come with a lockpick, so the player has nothing to worry about.
It's no wonder Skyrim is such a dangerous place, if criminals can just walk out of their prison cells whenever they please.
